[Increasingly there are a number of companies offering XML routers that
route packets at layer 7 rather than at IP.  With the exploding growth of
Service Oriented Architectures some speculate that XML routing with IPv4
within limited network domains will be the final nail in the coffin of IPv6.
Clearly there remain  lots of issues and concerns on how the end to end
principle can be maintained at layer 7, and the manageability of routing
tables based on XML lookups.  But an interesting development nevertheless --

Telecom Startups Play in XML

The XML wave is heading to the telecom world, with Cisco Systems Inc.
(Nasdaq: CSCO - message board) hot on the trail.

The ubiquity of XML (extended markup language) for areas such as back-office
messaging is leading service providers to consider the idea of routing that
traffic at Layer 7, without bothering with IP. It's part of the general
trend of Layers 4 through 7 networking, but XML has gotten particular
