[An interesting story how thieves are stealing lamp posts, parking meters
and copper wire around the world to sell as scrap metal in China.  Theft of
copper wire has becoming an increasing serious problem.  I have heard one
un-substantiated rumour that salvaging companies are offering telcos a deal
to replace residential copper cables with fiber cable. Even with copper
prices in the stratosphere it seems hard to believe that this would offset
the labour cost of pulling down the fiber and installing the fiber as well
as the capital cost of ONTs, etc- but it might tip the balance sheet in
favour of accelerated fiber deployment.  Who knows maybe unlikely driver for
FTTH and wireless mesh may not be bandwidth hungry applications or triple
play - but China's demand for copper -- BSA]
