There are a lot of similarities between the objectives of GENI and UCLP. We are currently putting together a paper discussing the similarities and differences - the abstract is below. I was particularly struck by the following paragraph in the IEEE paper by Turner, Peterson, et al--BSA] ".... what we mean by the term "architecture".To frame this debate, we outline the two extreme pointsin the spectrum.1 Internet purists have a very monolithic view of architecture: there is a single universal protocol, currently IP, that is required in each network element and around which all else revolves. Overlays are seen as blights on the architectural landscape, at best necessary evils that are reluctantly tolerated. In this view, virtualization is only a means by which new architectures are installed, not a fundamental aspect of the architecture itself. Others take a more pluralist approach to architecture, with IP being only one component of an overall system we call the Internet. Overlays are just one more way to deliver the service users want, and are no less appropriate than any other approach to providing functionality. In this view, the architecture is dynamic and evolving and, at any point in time, is defined the union of the various existing overlays and protocols. The ability to support these multiple coexisting overlays then becomes the crucial universal piece of the architecture. The purist/pluralist split is not just apparent in defining an architecture, but also in evaluating it. Purists aim for flexibility of an architecture, since it will remain in place for a long time; often this flexibility does not result in user benefits in the short-term. Pluralists, on the other hand, put more emphasis on short-term performance improvements, arguing that the desired flexibility... . Check http://www.eecs.harvard.edu/noss/ UCLP Roadmap for creating User Architected Networks using Service Oriented Architecture Abstract Around the world there are several initiatives to develop the next generation canonical network architecture . This discussion paper provides an alternative approach largely based on two significant development, first: the trend for more users to own, control and manage their own network resources and secondly: the demand by big science and large enterprises to have dedicated network resources for the data flows generated by their high end applications. As opposed to other approaches a key assumption in this discussion paper in regards to network architecture is that there is NO canonical network architecture. Instead this document describes new features and enhancements to the current implementations of the User Controlled LightPath (UCLP) software which will enable users to define their own packet or switched based network architecture including topology, routing, Quality of Service (QoS) and protocols based on the concept of many separate and independently managed Articulated Private Networks (APN) operating on top of one or more network substrates in different ownership domains. APNs can be considered as a next generation Virtual Private Network where, rather than signaling for a single end to end connection, a user can create a complex network structure, in any way they wish, by binding together layer 1 through 3 network links, instruments, computers, time slices and virtual or real routing and/or switching nodes. This capability is enabled through UCLP by representing all such network element, devices and links as web services, and by using web services workflow as the tool to allow the user to bind together their various web services to create a long lived APN instantiation.
