For more information on this item please visit the CANARIE CA*net 4 Optical Internet program web site at http://www.canarie.ca/canet4/library/list.html ------------------------------------------- [Here is a very interesting partnership between Erasmus Medial Centre and a local municipal FTTh project that allows the hospital to establish a high speed grid using PCs in the community connected to the FTTh network. The main web site is Dutch, but thanks to Vincent Dekker for this brief synopsis and pointer. The European BEinGrid is also worth checking out, as it demonstrating a number of commercial applications for Grids--BSA] http://www.trouw.nl/deverdieping/dossiers/article492446.ece/Almere_Grid_ We_hebben_elkaars_computer_nodig?backlink=true It's mainly on what grid computing can do for business in Almere (twin-city more or less of Amsterdam), but one detail might interest you: Almere Grid has some members who already have ftth at home (Almere being one of the first cities in Holland starting with ftth), and therefore it can help Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam with a study on bone ageing. This study is based on scans of bones, each scan being something of 0.5 to 5.0 gigabytes of data. Participants of Almere Grid have to download several scans then make one new scan out of these and send this result back to Erasmus MC. 'That's only possible when people have ftth' according to Ad Emmen, director of the Almere Grid foundation. I'm inclined to agree... ftth opens new exiting grid-possibilities for research... Almere Grid will officially start operating tomorrow, wednesday 27-9-06 It's also participating in the European BEinGrid-program: see www.beingrid.com best, Vincent Dekker, Trouw The Netherlands ------------------------------------- To SUBSCRIBE: send a blank e-mail message to [email protected] To UNSUBSCRIBE: send a blank email message to [email protected] ------------------------------------- These news items and comments are mine alone and do not necessarily reflect those of the CANARIE board or management. ----------- [email protected] www.canarie.ca/~bstarn skype: pocketpro SkypeIn: +1 614 441-9603 _______________________________________________ news mailing list [email protected] http://lists.canarie.ca/mailman/listinfo/news
