In a nutshell, 45 squats in Italy were raided ON THE SAME DAY. To me, this is significant of these times and is quite newsworthy. I'd like to pitch a piece on this for Free Speech Radio News. Perhaps other IMC coverage should happen. I'm sure there is no corporate coverage of this. It would be nice for Philly and other IMCs to get to the point at which there is enough energy and organization to put pressure on the corporate press. That sumer 2000 peak moment that started the Philly IMC had us threatening to outscoop them. One approach is to attend press conferences (or hold our own) and ask questions amidst the big journalists, which end up on their feeds. Yes, most of that gets edited out, but it pushes things in the right direction. If handled right, we end up with demonstrators doing press releases. The corporate journalists are basically pretty complacent: creatures of habit. I don't think of them as an "other", or as some kind of adversary - they are journalists just like us, and we want their respect, and to influence them. It would be great to get them in the habit of covering what demonstrators are saying, not just what police have to say about a demonstration; which is what usually happens - if there is any coverage at all. -dd Note: forwarded message attached. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Demonstrate in solidarity with Italian social movements!! The wave of repression in Italy is continuing under the Berlusconi regime. On the morning of December 4, investigations against 23 people in different cities throughout Italy were initiated by magistrates. This was followed by 45 raids in houses as part of the same campaign. The current repression is a response to the anti globalization demonstrations in Genoa in July 2001, 18 months ago, where Carlo Giuliana was murdered by police. Come out and protect our right to dissent! Gather at the Italian Consulate 100 S 6th Street Friday, December 20th 11:30am --0-1262395375-1040335989=:81035--
