Yes, the Prophets were human beings like all of us (as opposed to angels or 
jinns), but what makes them special and unique is the role & function assigned 
to them by God and the blessings bestowed on them due to that relationship.  
Their role/function was such that they had to be exemplary even before they 
started preaching their message... otherwise they would not have been heard or 
followed.  

None of us can raise the dead, but that was a miracle that Jesus (as) 
performed due to the special blessing on him.... none of the other prophets were 
given that particular blessing.  Solomon (as) was given the special ability of 
controlling the Jinns, etc.  We as ordinary human beings can never achieve to 
that level... If pious enough we may achieve the level of developing a special 
relationship with God but never to the extent of what the Prophets had.

There is a difference in making mistakes and committing sins.  Since Muslims 
believe that all the prophets preached the message of Islam (submission to one 
God), the basic teachings were the same, tho' there were differences in the 
laws given to each community.  So the major sins were major from day one, eg: 
murder, adultery, etc.  The Prophets were above committing major sins, they 
were all exemplary people.  So the Prophets were human beings in that they may 
have made some mistakes but did not commit sins.
