http://www.washblade.com/2003/12-26/news/national/antiterror.cfm
the article that is mentioned that claims ISNA to be a terrorist organization
was published in the Jewish World Weekly, a very conservative Jewish weekly
paper... the link to the article is at:
http://www.jewishworldreview.com/1203/marriage_terrorists.php3
ISNA is one of the most mainstream Muslim organizations in the US, although
their leadership is in fact very homophobic. What is interesting about this
whole alleged ties to terrorism bit is that ISNA's leadership (Muzammil Siddiqui
himself, who is mentioned in this article) met with President Bush post 9/11
and many of ISNA's leadership were Bush's "advisors" to teach him about Islam,
etc.
What is also ironic here is that this is the first time that ISNA has ever
signed up with an anti-gay organization or one that is fight pro-LGBT
legislation (marriage in this case)... whats also quite funny is that Islamic Horizons,
which ISNA's monthly magazine had only a small blurb about them joining the
Alliance for Marriage. The blurb never once mentioned that the group was doing
anything anti-gay, but rather they simply said that ISNA has joined the
Alliance for Marriage, a group that wants to amend the US constitution to define
marriage as between one man and one woman.
I never thought I'd ever be defending ISNA, but hey if we don't who will
right? This article does nothing but create more Islamophobia in this country and
once again alleges that Muslims are anti-Jewish and anti-Israel. I would
argue however that a lot of Muslims in the US are not at all anti-Jewish or even
anti-Israel, but they rather anti-Zionist and are against the treatment of
Palestinians in the Occupied Terrorities.
Also as an FYI, all the organizations mentioned in this article including
ISNA, CAIR and AMC all have issues press releases condemning the attacks on 9/11
and CAIR especially has been very vocal about condemning suicide bombings in
Israel.
Ironically also, all these organizations supported Bush in the 2004
elections!
Please send comments about the Washington Blade article to their editors at
[email protected] and also be sure to write to the Jewish World Review and
tell them what you think about their article alleging that ISNA is linked to
terrorist organizations...
[email protected] - thats the editor's email i believe.
Evan Gahr, the author of the article can be reached at [email protected]
For those that want to see about ISNA's work themselves, their web site is at
www.isna.net (not www.isna.org) though as you might have thought... ISNA.org
is the Intersex Society of North America - a great organization by the way)
;-)
thanks
