salam, uzma, definitely rejecting the entirety of the hadiths is an extreme, just like accepting all of them blindly is. on prophets, where did you get that they were above minor and major sins? funny because in the same e-mail you were talking about a prophet who was dissing the poor... for the elite. and what about the same prophet who was trying to hide something god would bring to light... in fear of his people? (33:37) or the same prophet who prohibited something lawful to himself in order to please his wives? (66:1) or... well, you get the point :-) and muhammad lived in a time when the world was pretty much civilized... when islam was pretty much set. you must understand that many things that are considered 'sinful' later in islam were not sinful before... and became sinful through experience. one good example is alcohol. the prophets were not 'above' anyone or anything. they were human beings... who struggled to be good, like all of us. if they are saying they are not anything more than human like all of us... (18:110) and certainly we know humans were created weak.... (4:28)... why make them anything they are not? certainly, the qur'an has 'corrected' the bible (i.e, "god does not need to rest" ... "god's hand is not tied" ... "noah's wife and son perished" ... "the wife of pharaoh was good" ... etc etc) and no one would ever claim the whole bible is correct but neither is it all corrupted. just like the hadiths, one should use historical truths to help offset :) your brother, afdhere Afdhere Jama Editorial Director HURIYAH Publications S A N F R A N C I S C O [email protected] http://www.huriyahmag.org >From: [email protected] >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [Progressivemuslimsnetwork] on yuksel and the "19" folk - Bible/Hadith use. >Date: Sun, 28 Dec 2003 09:23:45 EST > >As Salam Aleikum > >I am responding to bits and pieces from different e-mails..... > > >>There are whole parts of the Quran that specifically address the Arab >people, their are parts of the Quran that chide the people for rejecting one raised >from among their own kith and kin.
