Re: Online Petition Against French ANTI-HIJAB Law.

Happy New Year Folks,

What do people think about the line in the petition ". . . the hijab (a 
religiously-mandated head scarf worn by Muslim women) . . ."?

I always thought there was no compulsion in the religion and that the 
Qur'an wasn't so decisive in HOW it mandated modesty (which is why there's 
such variation even in Islamic countries and communities).

Might I be pointed to something to clarify?

What are people's own experiences with modesty of dress as we were raised 
and as is common in our respective communities?

Does it seem almost to defeat the beauty and power of as well as  the 
meaning behind the practice, itself, to argue for it's importance just by a 
'those are the rule' approach?

It almost seems as stoggy as the 'it represents repression and militantism' 
argument. The problem I think on both sides as that people (mainly men) are 
arguing about a practice that doesn't visit upon them . . . it affects 
WOMEN! It seems kinda silly to say 'Religious freedom . . . they must wear 
it!" or even to counter "Security and secularism . . . they mustn't!"

It begs the question, what's the real difference between these two 
seemingly opposed sides?
