Salaams, you may want to check out two strands of argument regarding the hijab issue- one is an essay by Saadiya Shaikh in the book Progressive Muslims- she tends to take the line of identity politics, and how women in different contexts understand both their femnism and Islam. The other is Fatima Mernissi's book The Veil and the Male Elite, which is a fascinating sociological account of the origin of the veil, and gender politics within early Islam.
