salam,
premarital sex ... i don't mean casual sex, but people who have sex while they are in long term relationships or exclusively dating or whatever... without being 'married.' i don't believe in casual sex... for the simple sake that it is psychologically and physically risky... :)
i don't know about any other faith, but in islam, it seems marriage and paternity are connected. for example, a muslim couple are not divorced until the wife goes through three cycles of menstruation (i.e, three months) ... just to make sure :) (btw, this is a direct qur'anic law found in sura baqarah or chapter 2.)
we have 'marriage first' because men were denying women they empregnated, (i read somewhere that this goes back to israelites in egypt) etc... and this was to make sure the society -- or at least representative of society (two witnesses) -- "knows"("nikah")
the rest things that muslim societies coin to marriage and sex are just pure cultural. in somalia, where i'm from, sex is perceived differently than -- say -- pakistan or saudi arabia, and vise-versa, while all of these societies have majority of muslims.
