Book questions (khalifat and Shia)

Salaam,
 
I hope not to stir an unnecessary debate...but maybe some people can provide some help/insight...
 
I am trying to read up on the period following the Prophet's (saws) death and also about Shia Islam....
 
1: is The Succession to Muhammad : A Study of the Early Caliphate by Wilferd Madelung a good book? are there any other/better ones anyone can suggest?
 
2: are all the writings in Nahjul Balagha considered to be historically accurate, or are there issues of authenticity with that too?
