salaam, nice to see you too. The number of lists and messages became overwhelming. I had 5000 in about a month and half were unread. The togethernet list and two Sufi lists put out far too many a day and I was unable to read them. So I unsubscribe recently but still get and have unread Shamirs list. The al awda I still get but working three jobs and dealing with a move and a 91 year old, tomorrow, mother I have had no time to write any letters and all the recent marches have been when I work. I feel guilty but do what I can to educate folks in my daily life. Someday. maybe more. Anyway a warm welcome. and God willing Palestine will be free soon. That wild mind of his. LOL. I was also on shams. When I was in Palestine yahoo shut down alot of my accounts (along with some of our lists) and I lost alot of contacts. It is always so nice to see that you are still among us , are you still on any of the awda lists. I was also on Shams as well. I have a hard time treveling and finding internet time and keeping up with my lists and organizational responsibilities takes alot of time , as well as managing all this with my health issues.:( Alahmdulillah I am still able to work on the projects dear to me, hopefully I shall have more time to get back to my writing, Insha allah. we keep crossing paths in this cyberworld ( big smile ) it seems. I hope you are well and it is so nice to hear from you here my Sister. Eileen ----- Original Message ----- From: Yasmine Anabta To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, March 15, 2004 5:13 PM Subject: Re: [Progressivemuslimsnetwork] slavery, polygamy Salaams, Just my two cents worth. In actuality I have to disagree . In the Levant, Jordan, Syria, as you stated there is not a "majority" of Shafi'i. There are certain town and areas that have larger concentrations of adherents to Shafi'i, but you would find also , currently there is a well thought out and strong oppposition and since Spet 11 things have shifted dramatically and are in such a continous process of change . Jordan just by its very geographical nature is very diverse. One can go literally form town to town and find enormous diffrences. In Syria this is also innacurate. There are also a variety of Madhabs and views and the ruling monarchy is Sectarian, Awalite, as well as the largest Druze population, many of whom hide the fact and claim publically to be Muslim in whatever way that suits them best. . We must remember that Jordan is also " Palestinian " in polulation so are you refering to Hashemites , ( what they would refer to themsleves as " pure Jordanians" ( inf fact Bedion in origin) which is a small minority of the population There is also a sizable polulation of Iraqi's both Shi'a and Sunni in Jordan . So such generalizations cannot be made. In Palestine you can find a mish mash of Madhabs.... depending on location and group beliefs ( parties and factions, rural or urban areas as well.) As Br. Na'eem wrote so well about when it comes to Islam in Palestine would should never make assumptions, for a variety of factors , that I could go inot, that have shaped the Palestinian National Identity , have also played a major role in the behaviors and actions of Muslims there. I wanted to point ourt earlier ,but was not phisicially well, to Br Na'eems experience in Capetwon that as a Palestinian this does not surprise me at all. I would not be surprised at all that people who seemed taken aback at someone identifying as an Islamist , would in his or her own home refer to themslves that way. But they are not going to say so. Under the severe draconian Murderous regimes of the Zionist Apartheid Regime and under the equally currupt and failed leadership of the PNA, many things stay hidden. Many things are at the same time a benefit as well as a liablity and this is a life or death situiation. Palestine is certainly the most diverse of the three. Shaped by historically events over many many hundeds of years, it is and remainns the most non religious of all in many ways. Intellecutalism, Nationalism, Communism , Socialism, Existentualism,Capitalism and so forth all thrive in Historical Palestine and even though often portrayed as Extreme Muslims by the press you can find such a variety in opinion and epistomology as anywhere in the west. And yes there are Devout Muslims , even among the most seemingly non religious groups. But this is a whole other discussion. In general.. generalizations can never be accurate. :) Rima Afdhere Jama <[email protected]> wrote: salam, well, in the arab world, even though the laws of hanafi is in use (since it was forced by the ottoman empire,) majority of people in places like syria, palestine, jordan, etc, are shafi'is in practice. also, south east asia is mainly shafi'i. shafi'i's model of law (i.e, quran, sunnah, ijmah, ra'yi) is now used by all schools of thought. it is considered the 'basic' for islamic thought. afdhere Afdhere Jama Editorial Director HURIYAH Publications S A N F R A N C I S C O [email protected] http://www.huriyahmag.com >From: "na'eem jeenah" >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected], [email protected] >Subject: Re: [Progressivemuslimsnetwork] slavery, polygamy >Date: Mon, 15 Mar 2004 10:21:10 +0200 > >salaam > >I'm sorry but I think your understanding of the madhhabi >demographics as well as your understanding of the >location of these madhahib needs some revision.
