Washington, D.C.- Friends of the Earth groups around the world today released the report, Nanotechnology, climate and energy : over-heated promises and hot air, debunking the promises made by the nanotechnology industry about its ability to increase energy efficiency and alleviate climate change.

http://www.foe.org/healthy-people/nanotechnology-campaign

Nanotechnology is a powerful new technology for taking apart and reconstructing nature at the atomic and molecular level. It is being touted as the basis of the next industrial revolution and will be used to transform and construct a wide range of new materials, devices, technological systems and even living organisms. Nanotechnology will likely underpin and impact all industries and sectors of the economy, and is likely to facilitate far-reaching changes in social, economic and ecological relations. Opinion is sharply divided regarding whether these changes will be largely positive or negative.

I recall a documentary on the Arc of the Covenant in which Menelik, knowing it was his last days, climbed Kilmanjaro and was never seen again. The implication was that he remains frozen there. I think this was on Discovery, maybe ten years ago.

"Menelik brought the original Arc of the Covenant back to Ethiopia from Israel," according to Daniel Tesfaye, an Ethiopian travel guide.

A lot has been written about the possibility of a "formalised group approach" for cryonics.

Historically, most revolutionary faith based movements have centred around a charismatic leader who attracts flock of unformalised followers. Only later do formalised structures appear. In the case of the followers of Christ, the Roman Emperor Constantine did the formalising out of a whole swarm of sects hundreds of years later. Once a large formalised group had been (literally in this instance) beaten onto shape, it can then splinter. Here the eastern orthodox and catholic faiths were the first main branches of a tree that has now spawned hundreds of religions believing basically the same thing.

The difference between the early and present positions of this is that during this process millions of people are drawn to these unquestioning beliefs. There are probably more people in the Westboro Baptist Church today than the whole of Christianity in say 100AD, and certainly more in the Jehovah's Witnesses. Yet these are just minority faiths on the fringes of the mainstream Christianity.

There are some successful religions that have started with a formalised group approach (also known as a "business plan") before they were anything more than "a twinkle in the founder's eye". The only one I can think of is Scientology, but there must be others. But they are a small proportion of all the religions out there.

Supporters of cryonics could try and use an existing religion. In this case, some adherents of that religion may be displeased with the association. Alternatively, an existing religion could decide to incorporate cryonics. This could be very disconcerting to cryonicists for those individuals who did not agree with it, or more importantly if they felt the rest of the world wouldn't like it and therefore take a greater stance against cryonics as a result.

How happy would we be if some hellfire cult decided that cryonics was the only way to avoid hellfire - and paying their leaders a large fee on the way. It may even double or treble our membership, but the public perception with everyone else may give greater long term damage.

Hi Cryonauten

are please so nice to correct me English text. Thank you in advance.

Kryonik in the information age understandably explains:

with the google search for German information about Kryonik I encountered
the term "information death". That means: After clinical brain death, a
phase of dying the information begins ... up to complete information death
(German short word: Informationstod). This dying down the information, one
could slow from few hours (at ambient temperature) on millions of years.
How? By this process slowing down. A possibility, in order to slow down, is
strong cooling. One lets the brain not disintegrate, but freezes it so fast
and as coolly as possible. The decay of the information is not stopped
thereby. But the theoretical period of the decay. Depending upon cooling
temperature, of hours on several billions years.

Teleportation - also admits of the name beamen - means to re-establish
nothing else as information at another place. In the future it will be
possible, frozen brains, which not yet information death are. into a new
body to beamen.
My question to our dear university graduates. Did I say somewhat wrong?
There could gladly also the German text grammatically/orthographically
correct : -)

Jahrmillionen. Wie? Indem man diesen Prozess verlangsamt.

In
Zukunft wird es moglich sein, eingefrorene Gehirne, welche noch nicht
Informationstod sind, in einen neuen Korper zu beamen.
Mein Frage an unsere lieben Akademiker, habe ich etwas Falsches
gesagt/beschrieben? Ihr konnte gerne auch den deutschen Text
grammatikalisch/orthographisch korrigieren :-)

Best greetings

There are quite a few passages by St. Paul,
which can be considered related to immortality
and transhumanism, though their translation
to English not always consistent. The quotes
below are taken from:

http://biblescripture.net/1Corinthians.html

The First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians

Chapter 15

21 For since by a man came death, by a man also
came the resurrection of the dead.

26 The last enemy that will be abolished is death.

42 So also is the resurrection of the dead.
It is sown a perishable body, it is raised
an imperishable body;

51 Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all
sleep, but we will all be changed,
52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye,
at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound,
and the dead will be raised imperishable, and
we will be changed.

53 For this perishable must put on the
imperishable, and this mortal must put
on immortality.

54 But when this perishable will have put
on the imperishable, and this mortal will
have put on immortality, then will come
about the saying that is written,

"Death is swallowed up in victory.
55 "O Death, where is your victory?
O Death where is your sting?"
