My hunch here is that for a while Delany saw it as testing another 
taboo. But he had clearly changed his mind by the time of the 
republication of... um... the book previously known as "The Tides of 
Lust", in which he added 100 years to some of the characters' ages to 
remove this factor. This seems like a clumsy solution, but knowing that 
Delany couldn't write clumsily if he had too, I suspect that he was 
drawing attention to the situation by appearing to deflect it.
