I finished the book last night, and though I found the later pages easier to read because there was less snot, piss and only a little bit of shit, I still found myself profoundly unmoved. The few glimpses of the rest of society Delany granted us were fascinating, though without an actual background to WHY these things happened, quite unsatisfying to me.

My main opinion regarding the book, the lives of characters in it, the dead trees, and the use of Delany's time remains: What a waste!

I know how life ends. I did not need to read this book, and only made myself finish it because it was written by Delany.

I quite like "Tides of Lust" and found "Hogg" fascinating, so I suspect it's not the transgressional nature of the themes, just the hopelessness and BOREDOM that offends me.

Gah.
