I'm no lit crit type, but as I gather, the role of authorial intent is a
bit of a lit crit shibboleth, right? I mean, po mo lit crit seems to
discount authorial intent entirely. Subtext and symbolism is to be found in
the reader, because the author is merely a vessel whose contents has been
spilled on the page. The honest author filters nothing, which means that
the discerning reader may find all kinds of crazy stuff in the text
(constructivism) as well as seeing significance in what hasn't been said
(deconstructivism). This is probably yet another reason why genre, which
imposes an artificial filter on that deluge of honest soul stuff, isn't
terribly popular with the lit crit crowd.

Before post modernism I think authorial intent wasn't the only thing you
looked for, but it was certainly not discounted.
