New Book The Little Old Lady Serial Killer

share with this listserv too, my first publication. It is titled The Little
Old Lady Killer: The Sensationalized Crimes of Mexico's First Female Serial
Killer, NYU Press, 2019.

The book deals with the surprising true story of Mexico’s hunt, arrest, and
conviction of its first female serial killer. It focuses on the search for
the Mataviejitas (“the killer of little old women”), the first ever
undertaken for a serial killer in Mexico. Through an analysis of police
reports and news media discourses of the Mataviejitas in relation to
international criminological discourses and Mexican popular culture, this
book questions who counts as a victim and how a criminal is constructed.

The Little Old Lady Killer presents a fascinating analysis of what serial
killing—often considered “killing for the pleasure of killing”—represents
to us.

Some of the key selling points for me are that the book evidences how
police authorities and news media prioritize some victim over others, and
the severe consequences of these categorizations.  La Mataviejitas’
targeting of elderly women is compared with the frequent murders of young
homosexual men, and feminicides, whose killings go all but unnoticed by
police. In the Mataviejitas case, teams of investigators were dispatched,
the media was called into action, the killer tracked, caught, tried, and
sentenced. Meanwhile there are not even the slightest echoes of this
official interest in regard to the serial killings of women in Cd.  Juarez,
Estado de México, or killings of homosexual young men in Mexico City.
