I'm passing along a message sent by Kirill Tolpygo to a list for Slavic
librarians, forwarded to me by Kristen Regina at Hillwood. If you can help

=====================

Dear Colleagues,

I am trying to track down a published reproduction of a painting, for which
I have the following data:

Artist: Nadezhda Vasil’evna Kashina (1896-1977)

Title: Happy Childhood (presumably, Schastlivoe detstvo?)

Year: 1931

There is a reproduction in ArtStore (attached), if you have access to
ArtStore:

http://library.artstor.org/library/secure/ViewImages?id=8CJGczI9NzldLS1WEDhzTnkrX3opflx4eyQ%3D&userId=gDNHeDw%3D<http://library.artstor.org/library/secure/ViewImages?id=8CJGczI9NzldLS1WEDhzTnkrX3opflx4eyQ%3D&userId=gDNHeDw%3D>

The data in ArtStore is somewhat suspect, at least judging from the
corrupted patronymic. UC San Diego, which supplied the digital image/data
no longer has any information pertaining to the acquisition and rights to
this image. The Experimental Cultural-Commercial Center Prem’era
(Экспериментальный
культурно-коммерческий центр Премьера), listed as the original repository
appears to be defunct.

Surprisingly, there is no mention of the painting in N.V. Kashina: zhizn’ i
tvorchestvo, 1896-1977 by R.Kh. Taktash. Tashkent : Izd-vo lit-ry I
iskusstva im. Gafura Guliama, 1982 – and it’s not listed in this book’s
rather extensive (10 p.) list of the artist’s major works.

I have tried every album of Soviet and Uzbek art, socialist realism,
catalogs etc. that I could get my hands on at UNC Chapel Hill to no avail.
When Kashina is included in these publications (which is seldom), paintings
in a very different style are typically reproduced. Moreover, all her
paintings from this time period (early 1930s) that I have seen are done in
a rather different style.

At this point I am starting to question the data I have. Is this painting
actually from 1931? What was its actual title? Is it even by Kashina?

If anyone has any advice, or could shed some light on this mystery for me –
off list, I would be very grateful.

Regards,

Kirill
