2014 ASEEES Panel Proposal: Vestiges of History and Legacies of State Interventions: The Historic, The New, and The Representations of the Past

2014 ASEEES “25 Years After the Fall of the Berlin Wall: Historical Legacies and New Beginnings” Panel Proposal Vestiges of History and Legacies of State Interventions: The Historic, The New, and The Representations of the Past Dear colleagues, I am interested in organizing a panel for the 2014 ASEEES conference on historic sites, landscapes, and monuments, cast broadly, as these underwent intervention, interpretation, and management by actors of the socialist state. How did the revolutionary state handle traces of the historic past(s) at different points in its political trajectory? What agents of the state were able to gain a voice in these debates and how did they do so within broader shifting contexts, including the transnational? Finally, broadening our understanding of the politics of culture to extend beyond individual groups of agents, what discourses shaped these agents, locals, and state agencies in managing the remains of the past? Possible paper topics include the interpretation of historic sites; the histories of museums of the state; legacies of historic preservation; the role of folk museums in the socialist state’s discourse on self; the role of “high architecture” in the state’s discourse; and sites of everyday commemoration. One paper will discuss the history of Slovene historic preservation from the immediate pre-war era of 1940 through the onset of late socialism in the 1970s, drawing attention to shifting trans-national connections that remained limited within a powerful local focus. Papers that discuss these topics in different settings, across time, or within trans-national connections are particularly welcome. Please send paper proposals to Veronica E.
