Re: SHERA panels for 2014 ASSEEES Meeting

Dear Erika (and all),

Thank you for writing to ask! At the SHERA business meeting at ASEEES in
Boston in mid-November, we (the officers) did open up the floor to discuss
ideas for panels for ASEEES 2014 in San Antonio, but virtually no
discussion ensued.

There are two ways for ASEEES to be considered "SHERA" panels:
1) Any number of panels may be flagged as SHERA-related panels so that the
ASEEES conference organizers can try to prevent them from being scheduled
at the same time. This effort was quite successful at the Boston conference.
2) SHERA may claim one panel to sponsor as the official SHERA panel. In
Boston we had no officially sponsored panel because the panels had been
formed already when we found out about this, and we did not feel it proper
to choose one panel over the others.

At the business meeting, the officers proposed holding the official SHERA
panel over the coming years as a series of state-of-the-field or
historiographical panels for subfields of SHERA such as icon studies, East
European art, architecture -- or however a given group might define a
subfield that wishes to assess its work in this way. Perhaps a panel in
honor of a senior scholar would also be appropriate. Little discussion
followed--some people in architecture spoke up--but no one expressed an
interest in forming a state-of-the-(sub)field panel, and we have not heard
from anyone since the meeting. The officers feel that SHERA should sponsor
only a panel that addresses the field in a broad way, and if there are no
proposals for such a panel, then we are happy just to continue flagging
SHERA-related panels.

My sense is that there are panels currently being discussed and formed
off-list. Still, the listserv is probably the best place to complete a
panel by finding a third speaker, a chair, or a discussant interested in
your topic. Listserv subscribers can post a message by sending it to
[email protected]
Please keep in mind that if you reply to a listserv post, it will go only
to the sender, not to the list. If you want your reply to go to the list,
you will have to add the list address to the "To" line of your message.

ASEEES proposals are due 15 January, so we hope to see a lot of discussion
on the SHERA listserv in the coming 10 days!
