Artists’ models are an essential part of academic studio practice, but
their work is often overshadowed by the creative accomplishments of the
painters and sculptors who employ them. In this paper, Margaret Samu opens
up the artist’s studio in 19th-century Russia to examine the work of models
both inside and outside the Imperial Academy of Arts.

Building on recent studies of artists’ models in the West, Dr. Samu
reconstructs the history of Russian models based on works of art and
artists’ writings, as well as poetry and fiction. Her work draws on newly
uncovered archival evidence of female models at the Academy before the 1894
reforms. Dr. Samu’s study also traces the changing image of the female
model in Russian cultural discourse, from the waif-turned-muse of the
Romantic era to the rescued “fallen woman” of Realism. Her research shows
how representations of artists’ models in Russia changed during the course
of the 19th century from a western European image to a distinctly Russian
one.
