Tatiana Baganova’s Sepia (2010) is a work capturing the atmosphere of Kōbō
Abe’s book Woman in the Dunes. The sand in the piece becomes a symbol of
time, the habitat of heroes, and is a symbolic element in the changing of
consciousness. The endlessness of the rolling sand is highlighted by the long
slow sounds of Avet Terteryan’s symphony. Maple Garden (1999) presents
strong, compelling, and mysterious visions. A bare-branched tree, bird sounds,
and a man with a large butterfly net are just some of the images that make
this work appear part fairytale and part grim dream. Beautiful, if
grotesque, and bewitching.
