Dear Mike:

I am the chair of the Department of Cinema and Photography at Southern
Illinois University Carbondale. We have an excellent program which mixes
film studies and production, skewed in the direction of do-it-yourself and
experimental filmmaking. I am a big fan of large state universities for
undergraduate education, where students can minimize costs but also have a
wide swath of different faculty across many departments. I went to the
University of Texas at Austin and the University of Iowa, and found them
delightful places to study the history, theory, criticism of film and
television.
