I think if faculty (both production and studies) lead students in the view that both "sides" of the field are valuable, they are more willing to be interested in studies. And by studies, I was thinking about criticism and history as much as about theory. I do think that students can be excited by continental theory, cognitive psychology, psychoanalysis, etc., especially if directed toward thinking about why audiences respond. Filmmakers often care much about what might excite and provoke their audiences.
