My five cents' worth, not being an animation expert: just as there is the distinction between special effects that you are supposed to notice as such as some form of spectacle (example: the Empire State Building being blown up in Independence Day) and those that you are not, usually in terms of realism/naturalism (example: Roger Thornhill/Cary Grant arriving at Prairie Stop at the beginning of the cropduster sequence in North by Northwest, or the meticulous depiction of life at sea in Master and Commander), there is more or less ostentatious animation (which seemlessly blends over into CGI). And what the conference organizers seem to say is that it is the hidden (i.e. unnoticed, unostentatious) forms of animation that are really important today. H ******** Hi Barbara, A lot of discussion and teaching on animation focuses on animated features, shorts and television shows. However animation gets used in lots of other places, such as advertising, on websites, music videos, television and film credit sequences, studio logos at the beginning of films, animated maps and visuals on weather reports and the news. Despite being obvious, it often gets forgotten in discussions of animation and on animation courses. Hence the term being used, ‘hidden’ animation. These were sometimes attributed to "disgruntled" animators. Disney animated films have been accused of this over the years. like this example <http://www.snopes.com/disney/films/rescuers.asp>in "The Rescuers". In the 30's & 40's, some Warner Bros shots were accused of containing subliminal messages as well. Hope this helps.
