As you will remember, some time ago I asked this forum for suggestions of films for a class on Hawks and Ford. Compiling the list was not easy, compromises had to be made. After much soul searching, these are the works selected (expanded to 13 from originally 12) for the seminar, though not in this order: Hawks (6): Only Angels Have Wings His Girl Friday Red River I Was a Male War Bride Gentlemen Prefer Blondes Rio Bravo Ford (7): Stagecoach Young Mr. Lincoln The Grapes of Wrath How Green Was My Valley They Were Expendable She Wore a Yellow Ribbon The Searchers IMHO, and upon re-watching these movies, neither The Searchers nor Rio Bravo strike me as the greatest works of either filmmaker. I find their output of the late 30s and the 1940s altogether more powerful and original. Once again, thanks for your suggestions, they have definitely had an influence on my decision-making.
