Call for Papers: For a Proposed Edited-volume on the Diverse Aspects of
the Indian Partition (1947), and its Representation in Literature and Film
The Postgraduate Department of History, Malda College, in collaboration
with the Postgraduate Department of English, Malda College, proposes to
publish an edited volume on the various facets of the Partition of India
and its representation/portrayal in literature and visual media,
tentatively by end-October 2013. As we perceive, scholarship of 1947-
division of the Indian subcontinent and its aftermath has largely focused
on the Punjab. In the present volume, special emphasis is being proposed
on the partition process and its implication for the social, economic and
political developments of Bengal/ West Bengal to present an antidote to
Punjab-centric approaches.

The following sub-themes may be considered for exploration/development
by prospective contributors:

(i) Genesis of the Indian Partition
(ii) Indian Partition debates in national, provincial and regional scenario
(iii) Life after the Indian Partition: Influx of refugees and the
transformation of the nature of life and politics
(iv) Partition memory, refugee identity and social struggle
(v) Refugees and struggle for survival: caste, gender and society
(vi) Gender and Partition: Women as sites of violence
(vii) Dalits and the Indian Partition
(viii) South Asian Partition Fiction in English
(ix) Partition in Indian Literature: Bengali, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi
(x) Women novelists and the Partition
(xi) The Partition in Indian films and general media
(xii) Legacies of the Partition: Kashmir, Irredentism and Terrorism
(xiii) The partition of Bengal – its diverse representations in historical
       documents, literature, and media
(xiv) Divided Identities and Hearts: the Bengalis during and after the Partition

Prospective contributors are being requested to e-mail their full papers to either
Dr. Ashim Kumar Sarkar (E-Mail: [email protected]), Associate Professor of
History, Malda College, Malda, within 15 May 2013. The historical research papers
and literary, critical essays – to be composed in 1.5-space-Times-New-Roman-
script-12-point-justified-format – will be assessed and thereafter selected by
a group of experienced academicians. Contributors, with papers selected for
inclusion, will be duly notified by e-mails. They will not have to pay any
subscription/contributory fee, and each be given a complimentary copy of the
publication on official release of the edited volume. No correspondence of any
sort on the nature or possibility of selection of papers will be entertained.
Contributors selected for getting their papers published will also be required
to send a printout of and a compact disc containing the essay in Microsoft
Word format to either one of the under-mentioned editors within fifteen days
of receiving the e-selection-notification.

The citations are to be made according to the latest M.L.A. standards, with
quotations fully acknowledged, and plagiarism strictly avoided. Contributors
are also being requested to limit their usage of electronic references for
citations as far as possible. Please mention the name of your full paper and
that of the section in the edited-volume in which you intend to get the paper
published (should it be selected) in the ‘subject’-space of your e-mail.
The diverse post-modern versions of Microsoft Word should not be used for
composition.
