(Yes I recognize that lighting would be considered part of mise-en-scene in theater, but to me this merely demonstrates the limits of applying the a theatrical term to cinema.) My problem with Sikov's approach is that it makes the concept of mise-en-scene so expansive to be meaningless. I've seen other textbooks that include sound in mise-en-scene. In these cases, it seems to me that the definition of mise-en-scene isn't much different than the definition of cinema. -- Deron Overpeck --
