H * * * * * * * * * * From: Leo Enticknap <[email protected]> Gene Stavis writes: "All of the films of the Frenchman Andr=E8 Cayatte concern matters of justice. As a former lawyer, films like An Eye For an Eye and Tomorrow is My Turn are quite relevant." Good luck getting to see them if you're not a French speaker, though. Studio Canal published an excellent DVD of 'Nous sommes tous des assassins' a few years ago, complete with a well done, hour-long MOD (it includes interviews with actual participants in the movie and historians grounded in French social and political history in the immediate post-WWII period, not just the usual suspect film studies rentaquotes). The transfer of the movie was professional and from decent preservation masters, too. It's currently out of stock on amazon.fr [1], sadly, but well worth buying if it comes back into print. However, it doesn't have English subtitles, and in fact, I'm not aware of any DVDs or BDs of Cayatte pics that do. The BFI has a tolerable 16mm print (though it's a reversal dupe, probably reduction printed from a 35mm release print, and so looks very contrasty and washed out), which I showed at a University of Leeds research seminar earlier this year. It has subtitles, though a lot of the dialogue is untranslated and the lines that are are translated into very idiomatic US English. It's a very interesting film, though, arguing implicitly that the French political establishment threw the former resistance fighters to the economic wolves in the immediate aftermath of the war, for fear of exposing their willingness to capitulate to and then work with the Nazis.
