Kinda late with this, but here goes. I think it's the doppleganger.
In FWWM, there's the scene where Laura has bad dreams, influenced
from the painting the Chalfonts gave her. A bloodied Annie appears
and tells her that the good Dale is trapped in the Black Lodge. You
could argue that Annie was in fact her doppleganger. I also think it
was Annie's doppleganger that Dale's doppleganger was carrying when
he left the lodge. When I add it up in my mind, it points to the
doppleganger.

"My name is Annie. I've been with Dale and Laura. The good Dale is
in the lodge, and he can't leave. Write it in your diary."

ones, and the one I choose to buy, is that it IS Coop himself. The
theory is that he faced the Black Lodge with imperfect confidence
(this is foreshadowed by Major Briggs in an earlier episode when he
and Cooper are talking in the woods right before Briggs is abducted)
and thus made himself susceptible to corruption (not deliberately, of
course.) He was then taken over by Bob, and the good, free will part
of himself (i.e. the doppelganger) was trapped in the Black Lodge.
The idea would be that the same sort of thing had happened to Leland
when he was possessed.
