Thank you for the informative update!

It is difficult for me to have a clear opinion about how I wished it
to proceed (what’s feasible is yet another thing).  I still love
NNTP (no passwords, real threads etc), however, NNTP as well as
mailing lists are obsolete.  Young developers can’t understand why
old folks prefer them, and use GitHub issues and forums instead.

My own data point is the following: It has been a long time since I
got interested in a project that offered a mailing list, so I am
only subscribed to a few old ones that are still active.  I could
subscribe to them directly if Gmane went down.

I am pretty sure though that if someone wants to maintain Gmane
further, it must be done thoroughly.  In particular, there must be a
way to add new lists, and the permlinks to postings must resolve.
There needs to be an admin team that can do the manual work.  I
think it is better to have no service at all than a dysfunctional
and waning one.

Thus, I tend to think that if you really cannot get control back
over the domain, let it die.  The other scenarios just sound
half-baked and frustrating to be, both for you and for the users.

That said, I am grateful for this service that I’ve used for more
than a decade, and if there is a glimpse of hope to get it up and
running the right way, I am volunteering to help, e.g. as an admin.
