	I'm anything but a Gmane master. However, I happen to have 
experience with a couple of cases in point. Both are lists I was 
subscribed to before ever discovering internet news, and I think before 
it existed.

	One list, dealing with library catalogs, tried gatewaying to 
Usenet back before Gmane. It got masses of spam. It took itself off right 
away.

	Some years later, after the munging was well established, that 
list re-allowed the gateway, and I followed it here for years. Then 
fairly recently, under new listowners, it fell off somehow -- not, I 
believe, by anyone's deliberate action. I believe that because I followed 
up with the new listowners.

	I asked that the gateway be re-opened. They discussed it -- and 
refused, because, they told me, they didn't want an external archive to 
exist. I don't understand that, but it's what they told me.

	The other was a list devoted to hunting. The gateway brought it 
not just spam, but flame wars galore. The moderator persisted, but had to 
ban certain topics entirely, and even then needed help from several 
assistant moderators.

	Summary: in my experience, the munging  has benefited everyone 
involved. I see no faintest ghost of a reason to abandon it, but very 
strong reasons to keep it. I urge the masters to persist.
