That Gmane "knows" that being subscribed won't be enough to let
postings via Gmane go through and tells you upfront.

There are different possibilities in Gmane's configuration regarding
what a mailing lists supports:

  · "non-public" means only subscribers can post
  · "unidirectional" mail-to-news, but not news-to-mail at all
  · "read-only" (announce, scm groups etc.)
  · default bi-directional

The situation you describe in the quote above is the first, the
situation you described originally is the second.

Why some mailing lists choose to reject mail from Gmane only the
mailing list administrator of each list knows.
