abiword won't load properly

Using version 2.8.6 on Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, 64 bit. Downloaded
yesterday from abiword site.

Did download, run (fail), uninstall; download, install, same problem:

When told to run, program loads, icon appears on taskbar, but does not
open. When click on icon, something flashes across left corner of screen,
but nothing else happens. Can close by clicking on X on small blank abiword
page.

For what it's worth, same program runs perfectly on my Asus netbook,
running W 7 Home, 32 bit.
