Well Mark - if you aren't having the problems i've had it would seem
that it is a xubuntu problem somehow. Mepis is a rather more stable
distro and one i'd switch to but i prefer using xfce (for speed) or
gnome.

Thanks all for replying to my query. I note the issue with rtf but
that is a minor matter compared with 'jitters'. i've been an Abiword
user for quite a while now and want to continue using it.
