2.9.2 won't open odt files

I am using abiword 2.9.2 installed with Debian Jessie (testing) and am
unable to open odt files, although previous versions of abiword and
Debian were OK. I could find no posts or bug reports with the same,
very obvious, problem, so I expect I'm doing something wrong. Any ideas?

On the other hand, my search did establish that 2.9.2 is very buggy,
but that downgrading to an older version could be difficult. We did
have an exchange on the forum in July about upgrading to 2.9.4. Does
anyone know if this would solve my problem? I'd like to stay with
abiword if I can; I like the speed and reported memory lightness.
