I think that's a question for the abiword-dev list.

I think the answers might be:

1.  An unnecessary duplication of effort?

2. Increased size of the tarball.

3. If AbiWord included their own dependency files, there could be a 
conflict between those files and similarly named files in a Linux 
distribution.
