BUT the abisource page tells me to go to a Ubuntu page, which does not 
lead me to a binary down-loadable package. After three days of attempting 
to find such I e-mailed the list for help.

I downloaded the source code for 2.8.6 I had hoped to avoid doing so 
because I will need to download many "dev" packets.

It does not help that I am not familiar with the Debian system having used 
Redhead.

The last time I tried to compile Abiword I could not find a required 
packet!

I have downloaded source code for 2.8.6. and satisfied cofigure's 
requirements.
"make" crashes with:
g++: error: unrecognised option --no-undefined
