A helpful way to debug this is often running the app from a terminal. in my case, open a terminal, then cd c:/apps/jEdit56/. your location will be different. then java -jar jedit.jar also 'java -version' just to see which java is really running. you may need to install an older java, as Oracle is rapidly trying to sink all the old code, so they can get you to pay licensing fees. was java listed as being updated?
