The FTP plugin is not under active development. Neither is the jsch library upon which FTP is based. It is possible the problems you are having are due to a jEdit bug, but to investigate further, you need to open a ticket in plugin-bugs tracker with info on how to reproduce, what kinds of errors you are getting (attach the activity log, in case it shows us something). If you are a Java developer and want to help out in debugging it and making it better, any help is appreciated. I am not the original developer and I am learning my way around the code just like anyone else.
