Maybe we could introduce functions (unbound by default, because we don't
have any free keystrokes left) that move the cursor 40 or 80 columns to
the left or right (when possible, otherwise as far as it will go)?  That
would allow scrolling sideways through a very wide text with just a handful
of keystrokes.

As an experienced Ctrl+Right user, I can say: no, it is fine: it is
marvelous to see a bunch of lines scroll by sideways faster than one
can read.  :)
