Newbie: Using poEdit for Japanese Translation

Probably a real newbie question here, folks. I would like to edit some japanese.po files but upon loading them in poEdit, the Japanese becomes garbled. I have selected Japanese fonts for the editor so that should not be the problem, right? My first choice for character set would be EUC-JP.
