Yes, me too I can not recreate this on my XP machine.  However it does
keep happing once in a while on the Vista box.  Whenever it happens if I
open the same file directly (i.e. not via the catalog manager) I can
then save it.

If you have something like a debug build which does not require me to
know/have any C++ stuff I could try and recreate the problem with it.

Anyhow I will keep trying to provide more details when it happens again,
but for the moment it is not a big issue as so far I never lost
anything, just had to kill the process and open it again.
