Well, right now I am unable to get the same behaviour (i.e. the
source file always save, even if I generate the fatal error).

I will report it when it will happen to me again.
As far as I remember the fatal error in question are either "number of
format specifications in 'msgstr[1]' does not match" (related to
missing entry in plural forms), or "'msgid' and 'msgstr' entries do not
both end with '\n'" (related to missing \n at the end).

Sorry for not being able to be more precise right now.
