Ok, I installed gtranslator and *that* program crashed as well with a 
segmentation fault!!!!

Maybe the problem is with my gettext. I find it unbelievable that 
xgettext, PoEdit and GTranslator would all fail to work - one prints 
nothing and the others segfault.
