I also find the way yahoo groups works (or not) confusing, and have seen messages misrouted. I don't use mutt, so the script you created does not help me. Instead, I do two things:
 

 1) If thunderbird, I double-check where the post is going.
 

 2) If yahoo groups interface, I click on double-down arrow to "expand header".
