The script isn't specific to mutt, but it does rely on being able to plug into
your mail reception process. A lot of mutt users use getmail or fetchmail and
then file using a tool like procmail, which will let you feed a message or its
headers through a script. Hence the script.
If the Thunderbird people ever bit the bullet and added Maildir support you
could achieve this separation of process: collect and deliver to folders with a
separate, pluggable, process or your choice. And read mail out of the Maildirs
using Thunderbird (or whatever your preferred mail reader may be).
Because Thunderbird elieves it is the sole user of your mail folders you're
kind of stuck with using its mail fetching and therefore its mail filing
system.
