The important part is the `noexpandtabs` which you apparently missed. The
`listchars` was only meant to make the difference visible. BTW you may also
want `:retab!` to convert already existing runs of spaces to tabs and/or
`:setl ts=4` (or 2) to make the real tabs take up less screen real estate.
