Sappho of Greenwich Village

If someone said 'Sappho of Greenwich Village' I'd probably think they were referring to Edna St Vincent Millay. Apparently, however, there was an actual Sappho of Greenwich Village, born Juanyta Clivette, who had claimed from the time she was six years old to be a reincarnation of the Greek poet.

There were similar spreads in papers around the country (this is the clearest scan I've found). 

I'm still a bit astonished since learning this morning that she was my grandmother's cousin (and close contemporary).
